Wolf's Motorhome Modifications
... and Other Stuff
A few years into my RVLock, the keypad began cracking. This allowed water intrusion and flummoxed the switches. I was able to get it to dry out and used a bit of Gorilla Tape to seal the cracks. Within a few months there were more cracks.
Turns out you can order an newly designed keypad for about $20.00. I ordered but got the wrong model. RVLock refunded some of the money from the first purchase. I bought the correct model once I confirmed it with the company. You pull the unit off the door and unscrew some tiny screws holding the switches to the original keypad. They warn you about overtightening the screws later but one of the tiny screws had been driven hard at the factory. It was impossible to remove. I had to drill it out and later reassemble the thing minus one screw. After removing the guts you are to "carfully peel off the original keypad cover". Yeah. Right. Mine was so brittle it just fell into pieces. Once off, it left sticky, black, ugly adhesive. I tried scraping. I tried 91% alcohol. I tried acetone which sort of helped. Most of the mess was removed.
You poke in the new keypad, the guts and screw it back together. I am not sure this will be properly sealed against driving rain.
I have some experience with homes battered by hurrican force winds. You blow saltwater at a device at 100 or 120 mile per hour steady wind, what is "waterproof" becomes a different story that just normal rain. The lock again works and I am happy. Worried. But happy. I'm betting a new lock is in my future four or five years down the road. Sure beats carrying keys.
